Battaramulla – a village over-run by a city!
As a resident lamented, the hamlet of Battaramulla has grown to accommadate on its borders, the vagaries of the new capital of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayawardanepura or Kotte as it is commonly known. With the parliament of Sri Lanka nestling in the picturesque environs of Kotte, Battaramulla has been acquisitioned by a mass of urban dwellers who have moved into the pristine land mass to claim a measure of kinship with the rulers not so far away.
The Battaramulla Rotarians one may not include in these ranks but they surely complement the populace of this village city and have over almost a decade made a sterling presence in District 3220, if not of the ceremonial capital.
Rotary therefore flies tall in this suburb and if for no other reason, the vision of one man whose passion has produced one of the finest clubs in the Rotary firmanent if records are anything to go by. And chartering this course from the inception, DGE Gehan Siribaddana, has been rightly described as the cornerstone of this club from the day of its charter on the 16 January 2002.
